Born in 1981, Jesse Gray was raised in the rural coastal region of North Carolina. Very early in his life he found an attraction to the southern landscape. The open fields and far off distant horizons, desolate areas full of atmosphere have always caused his eyes to search for meaning beyond what he sees. There was not just a feeling of belonging that he was attracted to but a sense of comfort from the thoughts these places would provoke. The effect these fields’ had on his imagination eventually influenced ideas for his art work and has still continued to inspire the direction that his recent studies have taken. He sees the blank surface as an ingression where his mind enters to wander in-between the lost and found. |

"Jesse Gray once described his painting to me as a "way to talk with
myself." The idea immediately struck me as central to art-making. This
conversation takes place on a deep level, beyond words, where emotions,
longings, and tensions reside. The hand and the eye are responsive to
inner urgings. For Jesse, physicalizing these invisible forces in paint
becomes a redemptive act."
